What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Jasper TX is a producer always worth checking out. His latest creation 'Black Sleep' is really doing the job for these ears. The opening track has a dramatic howling wind sound with ethereal distant and eerie vocal and beautiful acoustic guitar. Its a fairly dark beast of an album with its bleak ambient drones but there's beauty to be found with some parts even reminding me of Angelo Badalamenti. There's plenty of cutting edge and strange sounds happening. A very mixed palette of sounds are used but they all come together as a wonderfully to produce an album that's really an interesting little trip. Great stuff.

Info:
2007 saw Dag Rosenqvist, the man behind the Jasper TX moniker, carefully feed a handful of releases to a hungry public. Varied in both their format and their sound, all helped to further establish Rosenqvist as one of the most interesting musicians in his field. 'Black Sleep', in a way, feels like the album he has been building up to for some time now, like all his previous experience in creating haunting, oft-beautiful soundscapes has been harvested and fine-tuned for this album. Originally conceived as one continuous track, 'Black Sleep' is no random collection of songs - it is one work, one statement. Ambitious as it may be, it's impossible to deny its resounding success. As is often the case with Jasper TX's music, the guitar plays a prominent role. This album sees every conceivable sound caressed and tortured from
the instrument, from the romantic and direct chimes of 'Pt III' to the distant whisper of 'Pt. IV'. Rosenqvist states Oren Ambarchi, Johann Johannsson, Arvo Part and Tim Hecker amongst his influences - something that gives some insight into the sound and scale of this release. Impossible to explain in
simple terms, comparisons could also be made to Deathprod, with sounds slowly emerging and disappearing into thick clouds of murky warmth. The sheer scale and focus on display here also shows Rosenqvist's knowledge of Classical music, and in a way 'Black Sleep' is akin to a symphony - its
orchestra made from guitars, pianos and synthesizers instead of the usual strings and brass.
'Black Sleep' is possibly one of Rosenqvist's darkest moments, but that doesn't make the album any more enjoyable to listen to. Its moments of bleakness are somewhat in tribute to the soundtracks and visual artistry of David Lynch's 'Mulholland Drive'. This is music for rainy days spent indoors,
looking out towards a vacant street while tracing the build up and release of condensation droplets.
Miasmah has already built a reputation as being a trustworthy and consistent label, and 'Black Sleep' will only further its credibility. A slightly different sound in comparison to the back-catalogue, yet still fitting the label aesthetics perfectly, this release will undoubtedly be remembered as Jasper TX's
most concise and accomplished album to date.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
