What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brett feeling happy.

Gang of Four! This is exciting. 'Second Life' is the A-side of their new 7", sadly it's not a document of their addiction to sinister, life-sucking online worldy things but it does feature a chorus which says 'I'm alone but you own me' which suggests they probably have played it after all. It starts off brightly with a typical scratchy and trebly Andy Gill riff suggestive of their earlier greatness (think 'To Hell with Poverty') but after that it's not hugely memorable and the chorus doesn't really do it for me at all. Much better is the Tortoise remix of Paralyzed (from Solid Gold) on the other side, dubbing up the original to really good effect, it's worth the cost on its own despite the fact it feels a tad brief. Would've been good to hear them explore it a bit more. This one's limited and strictly one per person!

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
